The realization the Big Sean and Jhené Aiko are no longer together can give anyone “the feels”and I’m not crying, you’re crying. The two called it quits back in March shortly after Aiko releasing “Triggered” so it’s only right Sean Don celebrates his independence with “Single Again.”
Following his “Overtime” freestyle, the Detroit MC collaborated with (ex) Jhené Aiko and Ty Dolla $ign over a sample of Carl Thomas’ “I Wish,” Sean had teased the videos release on Monday with some funny video of field reporters interviewing people who had their opinions if he was guilty or innocent of cheating.
The lyrics on this track show his maturity and growth following the break up going from a single like “I Don’t F$@k wit You” to a song with a more mellow tone that preaches to listeners to make sure you’re good mentally.
“What have you done for yourself? What have you done for your mental health? (Yeah, yeah) I even tried the drugs and they didn’t help. Short term fix, that breaks everything else (Oh, oh)”
Directed by Lawrence Lamont the video stars Ryan Destiny and Keith Powers as a couple expecting but the relationship isn’t in a good place because of their opposing opinions on Big Sean’s situation. An appearance from Detroit native Haha Davis was made to show his support for Sean as a “Free man, free man yeah that’s him.” While Sean raps from inside a car on his way to court, on top of a news station van surrounded by passionate fans and eventually the middle of a street with a dump truck full of roses.
“The visual highlights a few social issues, including social media’s ability to sway people’s opinions to the point of disharmony, the social pressures faced by Millennials and Generation Y and media coverage of the Black man,” said Lawrence Lamont, “While bringing these key issues to light, I also wanted to capture Detroit’s beautiful spirit and style.”
Fans should be on the lookout for his project Don Life, sometime later this year and during a recent interview with Zane Lowe, he promises it will keep his day-one fans very happy.
“I just been returning to my roots, bro,” Sean said. “I’ve just been getting back to having fun with it. At one point, I felt like it might have started to become like a burden, or like work, but now it’s just fun. So this is just me having fun bro, expressing myself. It was a time well spent.”
Overall the video was enjoyable and please do forget to wake up and smell the roses. Check out the video for “Single Again” Below:
