By now I’m sure you have all heard the story about Victor Oladipo sending a text to his trainer just minutes after being eliminated from the NBA playoffs by the Cleveland Cavaliers. His “When do we start?” message to the trainer showed that despite just losing, he wasn’t looking forward to taking any time off or making summer travel plans. He was ready to get right back into it but as we have since found out, he also had time to take care of even more important matters.

Oladipo found out about a young Pacers fan who was having a much tougher time in life than just dealing with the loss of a basketball game. Cameron Kirk, a 10 year old Pacers fan, who was diagnosed with Leukemia on April 16th and has been getting chemotherapy treatment since, was thrilled when he received his letter from Oladipo, which encouraged him to stay strong.

Hey Cameron!

I recently heard about your battle with Leukemia, and I just wanted to encourage you to stay strong! I know this is a scary and very frustrating time right now, but you must believe in yourself and everyone around you that is helping you through this time.

May God give you the strength, comfort, and special blessings that you need as you face each new day. No matter the road you are given, remember to never give up. You never know what God has planned for your life.

I wish you all the best through your treatment and encourage you to keep a positive attitude and listen to your doctors, nurses, and parents — they are there to help you win this battle! All my teammates and I are #CameronStrong.

All the best,
Victor Oladipo

For Cameron’s mother, Carrie, who has had to see her son get weaker and pale with all the treatments, it was an overwhelmingly heartfelt moment.

“I won’t tell you what he said about LeBron,” she said with a laugh. “Cameron has just been very thankful that Victor would take the time to do this during the playoffs. He’s a very quiet kid, especially with what’s been going on.

“He just paused for a moment, and had this huge grin on his face. You could just tell.”

Something like this can go a long way to keeping a young child’s spirits up and letting them know that people out there really care about their well being. Just another reason to be a fan of Oladipo for doing class things like this.

Cameron, we are all rooting for you.
