The Weekly Drop Pt. 26

Celebs

This week has been a little difficult for us all following the loss of Kob Bryant, his daughter Gigi, and the seven others in that tragic accident. This week’s playlist cover art is dedicated to the man, the Father, the Basketball Legend Kobe Bryant. Rest In Paradise.

This week in music we’ve seen the return of a Legend in Lil Wayne who took 24 seconds of silence on the 8th track in memory of Kobe, Tinashe has released the original “KOBE LA version” of her song “Hopscotch” from her album Songs for You. In this original version, she says the “L.A. like I’m Kobe,” this version was posted to her Sound Cloud page with the message “Rest in power Gigi and Kobe Bryant.” Chief Keef released a single entitled “Kobe,” and the tributes continue as Meek Mills enlist Roddy Ricch on “Letter to Nipsey.”  Here are a few of the songs that stuck out to me in the playlist:

As DC Comics Birds of Prey is slated to hit theaters this Thursday, of course, another track off the movie’s office soundtrack drops. This time it was Saweetie and Galxara with “Sway With Me,” with an accompanying music video showing the duo up to no good. A high-energy, Latin-infused feminist anthem that gives the listener an electrifying brass section, robust rhythmic punches, and a manipulated vocal introducing the famed “Sway” hook sampled from Dean Martin then GALXARA’s vocals take it from there.

Image result for Just Like Jay- K. Michelle"

Durning the Love and Hip-Hop, LA Reunion show K. Michelle spoke about trying her hand at Country music and the track entitled ” Just Like Jay,” featured in her fifth studio album ‘All Monsters Are Human’  doesn’t disappoint. Accompanied by a visual, this single is tonally reminiscent of Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road,” this single is definitely a hit. Speaking about personal topics with lyrics like, ”I walked away from Atlantic because they wanted me to be Mary J, and the whole time I was thinking who the hell gone be K” or “Crucified for my mistakes, make me wanna walk away. Maybe I should walk away, fade to black just like Jay, ooh ‘Cause y’all don’t love me anyway, so I’ll fade to black just like Jay,” a direct reference to the iconic Jay-Z’s “Fade To Black” documentary and his The Black Album. K. Michelle put her heart and soul into this song and if that any indication this album will be one to be on the lookout for.

Amber Mark is back with “Generous,” as the follow up to “What If,” which released back in June 2018. The New York-based singer’ who according to Pitchfork her soulful pop will make you dance and cry at the same time. Generous- Amber Mark  Milca P. of Hot New Hip Hop said it best on “Generous,” Mark a slow burner delicately details the anticipation of a bedroom rendezvous. Continuing to create fan anticipation for her full-length album.

Image result for Dinosaurs In Love -Fenn Rosenthal, Tom Rosenthal"

One of the cutest songs on this playlist is sung by 4-year-old Fenn Rosenthal, it’s a song about dinosaurs in love but the reason it’s becoming a viral hit was its dark ending. Tom Rosenthal shared this adoral video of his daughter Fenn’s original song “Dinosaurs In Love.” Tom tweet said    “…my nearly 4-year-old daughter, recorded her first ever solo song today. She came up with all the words herself and I helped her a little bit with the tune. It’s called ‘Dinosaurs in Love’.” Moved by Fenn’s heartbreaking song on Tuesday Jimmy Fallon did his rendition of the song.

Image result for Back To It - Josie Dunne"

Josie Dunne is a 22-year old breakout singer, with a supernatural ability to take listeners on a vibrant journey. Having worked as a professional songwriter since age 16, and now on the cusp of releasing her soul-baring second EP  ‘Late Teens Early Twenties,’  Dunne says in so many ways we have been and are continuing to play witnesses in real time to her self-discovery. “Back To It,”  is a classic ballad of someone realizing that its time for a change and this current relationship just isn’t it.

Image result for Fkn Around- Phony Ppl feat. Meg Thee Stallion"

It has been a month since we saw Megan Thee Stallion’s Tiny Desk Concert with the Brooklyn neo-soul band Phony Ppl during the performance, they debuted a brand new collaboration called “Fkn Around.” Today, they’re finally sharing the studio version of the song, a smoothly funky jam about fucking around.

Image result for Rodeo- Lil Nas X feat. Nas"

Lil Nas dropped the remix of his 7 EP track “Rodeo” with new verses from rap icon Nas. Debuting the track during his performance at the 62nd Grammy Awards in Los Angeles fans now have the opportunity to stream it on all platforms.

Image result for salem roses to his ex"

This is a song about gratitude as Salem is so thankful that her current boyfriend broke up with his ex. states she would be best friends with her boyfriend’s ex and send her roses with a note thanking her for making him the best. Just a little shade was thrown seeing as his ex doesn’t know what she lost and one woman’s trash is anyone treasure.

APPLE TV+ “THE MORNING SHOW” TAKING A DEEP DIVE INTO THE MODERN WORKPLACE IN THE ASCENSION OF THE #METOO MOVEMENT.

APPLE TV+ “THE MORNING SHOW” TAKING A DEEP DIVE INTO THE MODERN WORKPLACE IN THE ASCENSION OF THE #METOO MOVEMENT.

Celebs

As we said goodbye to the year 2019 and enter into the new decade of 2020, we could also say goodbye to modern television and cinema as we know it. Made evident from last night’s Golden Globe awards some of the nominees up for awards were from made streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+ and so on. It is abundantly clear we’ve entered a new era of entertainment.

There is one show on Apple TV+ that should get your attention and that is “The Morning Show,” inspired by ‘ Top of the Morning: Inside the Cutthroat World of Morning TV.’ written by journalist Brian Stelter. The book documents Stelter as a media reporter of the New York Times and the several daytime shows, their host, and events he oversaw such as the rivalry between Good Morning America and the Today show over morning television ratings. The book focused heavily on Ann Curry’s replacing Meredith Vieira on the ‘Today Show.’

The Golden Globe-nominated ‘The Morning Show,’ pulls back the curtain on the people that help America wakes up by taking a deep dive into the modern workplace in the ascension of the #MeToo Movement.

(Before we move any farther I would like to issue a spoiler alert, as I will be reviewing the entire series)

Premiering on November 1 with episodes 1-3 This drama drops you directly in the line of fire as fictional broadcast network UAB is now in crisis after firing of Moring show host Mitch Kessler (Steve Carell)  for his sexual misconduct scandal.  Now America’s favorite morning news show is under the spotlight as it becomes the news.  Mitch’s Co-host Alex Levy (Jennifer Aniston) grows furious with both mitch and the network for keeping her in the dark about the scandal.  Alex sees this as a chance for the network to hit a hard reset on its show, she fights to remain as a top news anchor.

Elsewhere viewers are introduced to conservative reporter Bradley Jackson ( Reese Witherspoon) goes viral after a video of her angrily fact-checking a coal mine protester is posted on Youtube. See this as an opportunity to move forward from the Kessler crisis, Bradley is offered a chance to come on The Morning Show for an interview.

After Bradley’s meltdown is presented to Alex she is skeptical about Bradly being unaware, she’s on camera. Alex presses Bradly about this believing it was a publicity stunt and talks down to her in a condescending manner. Bradley’s unwillingness to back down has piqued the interest of Network head Cory Ellison (Billy Crudup) later calls Bradley and asks to meet her so they can discuss her future.

In Episode 2 ” A Seat at the Table” beginnings with Corey allowing Bradley to interview for the opening seat left by Mitch, while Alex is scrambling to secure her job by renegotiating her contract with co-host approval rights. Following a secret meeting with Mitch, Alex was informed the UAB was planning on moving away from her because of her low fan approval rating. Amid this chaos, Alex is preparing to receive The Leadership in Journalism award. (Which Corey told her the network paid.) Cory invites an unwitting Bradley to the event honoring Alex and seats the women next to each other. Alex feeling threatened that Bradley is the choice as her replacement, she threatens to leave the show if her demands aren’t meet Cory scoffs at the demand for co-host approval and calls her bluff. In an act of desperation, Alex put UAB in a difficult position announcing Bradley as her new co-host during her speech.

So that leads us into episode 3 ” Chaos is the New Cocaine,” UAB is now forced to scramble and prepare for Bradley’s debut on The Morning Show on Monday,  so the team prepares to work all weekend to prep her. The growing pains are apparent as Bradley struggles to

The staff of The Morning Show is in turmoil over the announcement. Alex has told the press that Bradley will debut the following Monday, so as the team prepares to work all weekend to prep her, Alex arrives to assert some control over the proceedings. Meanwhile, a frustrated Bradley has not even decided if she will accept the job. Mia Jordan asks Chip to be Bradley’s producer and announces herself in the position before he has offered it to her. Forced to go along with Alex’s announcement or lose face, network head Fred Mickland is furious, but Cory sees Bradley as an opportunity to reinvent the show and eventually be rid of Alex. Bradley is unhappy with her initial wardrobe and camera tests, so she challenges the copy Mia is providing her, and dispenses with the clothing chosen for her by Alex. Fred summons Alex to browbeat her in front of a room of network executives, but she informs him that he lost power over the show long ago, and from now on they will be doing things her way.

The choice of Bradley was purely a power move on Alex’s part to show that UAB that they need her for the morning show to succeed little did she know that Bradley would be the watchdog of UAB nightmare. For a company that was trying to cover up its involvement in having knowledge of Mitch’s behavior and allowing the toxic masculine in the workplace. Bradley habit of speaking as if it was just you in her got her the nickname Two F**Ks Jackson, and her debut on The Morning show was no different going off-script from the on-air persona the show hopes to promote once mentioning her struggles as a teen, including having an abortion. This revelation incites controversy but it also galvanizes the younger, pro-choice audience. Alex is then convinced to give Bradley the interview with one of Mitch’s accusers, but Bradley’s persistence to find the truth has the accuser reveals more than the producers had planned. Mitch’s accuser states that the relationship was consensual but being in work environment were everyone knows something as personal as your sexual history embarrassed her to point where she was forced to quit to escape this toxic work environment. This then prompted an investigation launched by human resources into Mitch’s conduct, with most of the crew offering their support to Mitch and denying knowledge of his sexual misconduct.

That interview is what set Bradley’s mind to find out the dark history of UAB and its tendencies to quite Mitch’s accuser. From Episode 5-10 views are given small pieces of information that help to put the puzzle together. We travel back to the fall of 2017 in the episode entitled ” Lonely at the Top,” taking the real-world event of the Las Vegas shooting in 2017.  Hannah Schoenfeld (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), a junior booker at the time, was asked to travel with the crew upon Mitch’s recommendation after the coverage of the story raps Mitch lures Hannah into his hotel room with the promise of a funny movie after a depressing workday. His predatory behavior toward women in the newsroom as revealed as he forces himself on to Hannah. The four-minute scene of the actual assault and rape is very difficult to watch as we see Hannah feeling powerless as her eyes go cold. Mitch used her body like it was nothing much than a toy for his pleasure and dispose of  Hannah once he finished. She realizes this when Mitch doesn’t even acknowledge her in the hallway giving Hannah the motivation to reported Mitch’s harassment to the network chairman, she was then offered a promotion as a talent booker in exchange for not rocking the boat.

Image result for The Morning Show Lonely at the Top"

This is very important because it gives Mitch creditability to his claim the board knew of his behavior for a while and silences thoughts who would shed light on his misconduct. Unforturney this new information has Bradley asking Hannah to corroborate Mitch’s statement bring back those mortifying memories cause Hannah to spiral back on the dependency of drugs to numb the pain. In the season finale, Hannah found dead from an overdose, after Mitch approaches her to help him take down network executives (and the network, in turn, offers her a new position in Los Angeles).

The news of Hannah’s death brings Alex and Bradley to the same page to report UAB on The Morning Show for its involvement in covering up and allowing Mitch’s predatorial behavior in the work environment. In the height of the MeToo Movement, this show fundamentality breaks down ho the abuse of power, corporate corruption, lead to a culture of silencing women.

If you want to check out the Golden Globe-nominated  ‘The Morning Show,’ and you own an iPhone you’re in luck. Apple is allowing you to have Apple TV+ free for a full year. Check out the trailer below:

Netflix Original Series “Sex Education” Second Season Doesn’t Disappoint

Netflix Original Series “Sex Education” Second Season Doesn’t Disappoint

Celebs

Honestly, high school can be tough, hell being a teenager can be even tougher. Add in the ever-changing spectrum of sexuality this could be enough pressure to have anyone being an anxiety attack. While Otis Milburn (Asa Butterfield) has got you cover, a socially awkward high school student who been surrounded by manuals, videos and tediously open conversations about sex, because of his mother’s profession as a sex therapist. Otis has become a reluctant expert on the subject.

In the first season of an Netflix original series  “Sex Education”  after inadvertently assisting the school bully with his sexual performance anxiety, Otis’s love interest/crush Maeve Wiley—a confident but troubled classmate—convinced him to sets up an underground sex therapy clinic to educate their fellow students on how to deal with their sexual problems. But through his analysis of teenage sexuality, Otis realizes that he may need some therapy of his own.

If you were to ask me to describe “Sex Education” I’d use the words from Sophie Gilbert, staff writer at The Atlantic, “Sex Education debuted early in 2019, it felt like a delightfully earnest (and anglicized) patchwork of teen classics: the raunch comedy of American Pie, the small-town romanticism of Stranger Things, and the British oddball kids of Skins and The End of the F***ing World, with the sweet sex-positivity of Big Mouth thrown in for good measure.”

Otis and Ola sharing a moment in her room.

Now back for another season when we last left Otis, Ola (Patricia Allison) and he shared a moment in front of his home ending in him being aroused enough to finally able to masturbate. In the first episode, fans are made fully aware of this as we get a montage of Otis satisfying his sexual urge. This comes to a screeching halt when Ola tells Otis she ready to have sex and Otis can get an erection. He believes it due to the excessive masturbation and his broken his

Asa Butterfield and Ncuti Gatwa in Sex Education (2019)

Best Friends Otis and Eric realizing they’re lost on this “camping” trip with Otis’ father

Otis’s best friend Eric Effiong (Ncuti Gatwa) in my honest opinion had the best subplot and character developments within the series. He was never a character questioning his sexual stating he came out to his parents when he was 13, but He was someone who had to learn to love himself. Secret rendezvous with ex-bully Adam Groff (Connor Swindells) had Eric had this farfetched idea that once Adam was ready they would become public but Adam hadn’t even come to terms with his sexuality yet.

Sami Outalbali in Sex Education (2019)

Rahim (center) First appearance in Sex Education

Enter in new transfer student from France Rahim (Sami Outalbali), an instantly popular guy due to his looks, accent and mysterious aura. Eric wonders if Rahim is gay his questions ae answered when Rahim asks Eric out through text. Eric felling his now and a relationship triangle is brought to reality when an argument with Otis helps him realized that Adam will never come around and why to be with someone who bullied you because he’s scared of his sexually. Once realizing this Eric goes through a positive character arc that allows him to be okay with himself and beliefs. So Eric accepts Rahim’s offer and the two begin dating.

Characters left to right: Aimme, Maeve, and Otis

Maeve Wiley (Emma Mackey) went through a lot last season her secret relationship with Jackson Marchetti (Kedar Williams-Stirling) ended with pregnancy and abortion. The scene of her deciding to have an abortion and be alone during the medical procedure was heartbreaking. Maeve was also a candidate for expulsion following the acquisition from the Headmaster Mr. Groff of selling the drugs. Maeve went through a lot and season 2 was no different even though there were some highlights like Maeve realizing her potential, quits her job and tries to get back into school, the hits keep on coming as her mother arrives at her doorstep with the baby after her abusive boyfriend kicked her out. The relationship hit some ups and downs but subsequently ends on bad terms after she is forced to make the right decision for her younger sister’s safety.

In all the new season of “Sex Education,” didn’t disappoint the subplot around all support characters major or minor were refresh pauses from Otis story arc. We got to see Jackson find his passion in something other than swimming, Otis’ Mother Jean Milburn (Gillian Anderson) became sort of chancellor for the students following a frenzy about a chlamydia outbreak were student believed the STD to be airborne. Jean’s expertise in the subject matter of sex made her the perfect person to bring on once the school realizes that better sex education is needed. This puts Mother and son in direct competition with one another unbeknownst to her. One episode that stood out was when the cast of girls introduced in this season and last, where accused of slut-shaming one of the faculty members. In a “Breakfast Club” style assignment the girls were forced to write about what bounds them together, the answer was shared experiences of unwanted sexual advances. This episode concluded the story arc of Aimee who was on the bus to school and traumatized when a man behind her masturbates and ejaculates on her.  Throughout the season she preferred to walk everywhere because she couldn’t handle another encounter with that sick man. In an act of sisterhood Maeve, Olivia, Ola, Lily, and Vivgo meet Aimee at the bus stop to help her face her fears and ride the bus again.

“Sex Education,” is streaming now on Netflix catch up on one of the best teen comedy/dramas around. While season three has yet to greenlighted by Netflix show creator Laurie Nunn says she has already begun writing season three. “We won’t find out whether we get a series three until the end of January, so fingers crossed!” said Nunn, so if you are a fan of the series share with your friends who may be looking for something new on Netflix.
