The Cincinnati Bengals released Andy Dalton on Thursday. Given how long former number one overall pick and NFL MVP, Cam Newton has had to wait since the Carolina Panthers it seemed like Dalton would have an extended stay in free agency before finding a new home.

That has proven to be incorrect.

Tonight, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Dalton has agreed to terms on a deal to join the Dallas Cowboys:

As noted in the tweet, Dalton will return to Texas where he grew up (Katy, TX) and where he played in college (TCU).

The interesting part about this union is the elephant in the room that is Dak Prescott’s expiring contract. The Cowboys and Prescott have been unable to come together on an agreement for a contract extension and he is currently signed under the franchise tag for this year, which the team has the power to do again next season too.

However, by bringing in Dalton, the Cowboys provide themselves with an alternative in case negotiations with Prescott hit an impasse. He’s a former NFL starter with playoff experience—though not a successful one. Jerry Jones has made his move to invest in the “Red Rifle” as insurance in case Prescott’s contract demands continue to not align with Dallas’ preferences.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that the Cowboys believe that the move does not have anything to do with Dak Prescott:
