Cam Newton has not taken a single snap for the Carolina Panthers since Week 2 and the team announced today that it would be placing him on IR:

Newton is dealing with a lisfranc injury to his foot. However, the injury isn’t severe enough to require surgery. The initial hope is that time off and rehab is all that the former MVP needed to get back on the field.
Over time, it became obvious that Newton’s timeline would ultimately be extended to a permanent absence for the remainder of the 2019 season.
Though he technically is eligible to return by Week 17, the team has made it clear that Newton won’t return until he is 100 percent healthy. With Kyle Allen providing stable play in his absence it’s unlikely that they would rush him back this year.
ESPN’s Field Yates and FOX’s Jay Glazer made astute observations that given the cap relief that moving on from Newton would provide the team as he enters the final year of his current contract in 2020.
Cam Newton is due a non-guaranteed base salary of $18.6M in 2020.
A question that will be asked: could Newton wind up as a starting QB somewhere else next season?

Cam Newton goes on IR. Year in Carolina is over and potentially more. He has one year remaining on his contract and if #Panthers trade or release him after this year they get a cap savings of $19.1 million!!! Big decision to make on one of the league’s biggest stars
