Featured

It’s the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Season, and fans worldwide are excited for basketball to make its return after just a short break in the action after last season’s spectacular off-season with the Milwaukee Bucks winning the NBA Championship. With things moving forward and the season opener merely hours away, we’ll take this time to provide some insight on the teams and how they’ll stack up this year with a projection of worst to projected favorites coming out of their conference. In this installment, we discuss the Eastern Conference.

________________________________________________________________

15. Detroit Pistons

With their recent addition of this year’s 1st Pick in the NBA Draft in Cade Cunningham, the Pistons are in a state of full rebuild, moving on from much of the veteran presence that they had on their roster. In no effort is this discrediting Cunningham, for he has the potential to be a household name in this league for years to come. However, the Pistons will have to go through some trials and tribulations to get to a place where they have an established identity as well as allowing these guys to get into the swing of playing as NBA caliber team.

Prediction: 20-62

14. Orlando Magic

Similarly to the Pistons, the Magic have committed to a rebuild as of last year, moving past the likes of Nikola Vucevic and Aaron Gordon, and have put their efforts with a younger roster they hope to develop over time. The Magic have found themselves with a group of very talented players with enormous amounts of potential such as Jalen Suggs and Cole Anthony. One of the few things that set Orlando apart from Detroit is simply due to a stronger veteran presence, something that seems imperative in any NBA locker room. Despite some struggle is projected going into the season, the Magic are surely going to be a team to keep eyes on in years to come.

Prediction: 22-60

13. Cleveland Cavaliers

The Cavaliers have been a team that have found themselves towards the bottom of the standings for some amount of years now, and despite having a solid core amongst themselves, have not quite been able to have things pan out and get themselves into playoff contention. Although, over time the young stars on this roster have slowly been coming into their own and fans can only hope that this remains constant. The question lies on just how much better can they get after having had some time to work together this past off season.

Prediction: 25-57

12. Washington Wizards

With quite the blockbuster trade that sent Russell Westbrook to the Los Angeles Lakers, the Washington Wizards find themselves in a situation where the state of their franchise is in a bit of a lull. The Wizards are currently comprised of a group of guys that have been undervalued and overlooked, which ultimately gives you an interesting underdog storyline with the likes of Bradley Beal frontrunning the show. With that in mind it’s hard to fully believe that this Washington group will find themselves being able to put themselves into playoff contention with the pieces that they have at this time.

Prediction: 30-52

11. Toronto Raptors

The Raptors have finally decided to part ways with Kyle Lowry, a household name in the North that is Toronto, and have set course in revolving themselves around the younger pieces that they’ve acquired as well as the remainder of their championship roster back in 2019. The Raptors have a solid roster, but nothing that really jumps out as a stand out player. Although there’s nothing necessarily wrong with that, the Raptors might find some difficulties as the season progresses especially when facing teams that have 2-3 stand out names on their respective rosters. With that in mind, these are big years for the likes of Fred VanVleet and Pascal Siakam, and it’ll be very much interesting to see how they perform as the season goes on.

Prediction: 32-50

10. Charlotte Hornets

We said it last year and we’ll say it again this year: the Hornets are going to be an exciting team to watch all season. They’ve got a fun roster to watch, and having LaMelo showcase to the league that he’s more than comfortable on the NBA floor, there’s a lot in store if your a Hornets fan. Having been bounced out of the Play-In Tournament last season, surely they organization hopes to find themselves in a position to go further this time around, and basing things off the preseason, the Hornets seem quite capable of doing just that.

Prediction: 35-47

9. Indiana Pacers

The Indiana Pacers in years past have found themselves to be quiet contenders of sorts. There’s nothing inherently flashy about their basketball, but it’s worked. They found themselves falling a bit short as of last year, having not making it to the Playoffs and falling one game away from being able to compete into the post-season. The Pacers organization can only really hope to try and continue to aim for the Playoffs and making deeper runs before questions start rumbling about their roster.

Prediction: 39-43

8. New York Knicks

The Knicks last season had their struggles come Playoff time, but are prepared to reintroduce themselves this coming season with the likes of Kemba Walker and Evan Fournier being acquired over the off season. The team has been able to cement themselves as a Playoff caliber team last year a Most Improved Player Award worthy performance in Julius Randle and hope to take what they’ve learned and apply it coming into 2021-22. The only thing the Knicks really need at this point is more Playoff experience, and with that as time goes on, will hope to be a high contender for the Championship.

Prediction: 41-41

7. Miami Heat

The Miami Heat are coming off a rather disappointing season last year, having been bounced from the Playoffs early to the Milwaukee Bucks. However there is no real shame having lost to the Champions, its a bit of a head scratcher that the same team that competed in the NBA Finals in 2020 got swept in the first round the year following. This time around it seems as if the Miami Heat have a bit of a clean slate, having made some key acquisitions, as well as allowing the development of some of their younger guys. Adding names like Championship caliber players in Kyle Lowry, PJ Tucker, and Markieff Morris should blend wonderfully with the likes of the younger Heat players in Tyler Herro and Duncan Robinson. We’d also be remiss to ever count out the likes of Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo, which leaves a recipe for an exciting season for the Heat.

Prediction 42-40

6. Chicago Bulls

Having come off the preseason in rather spectacular fashion going 4-0, the new revamped Chicago Bulls seemed to have made waves as we approach the season opener. The bulls seemingly gathered a large amount of talent in the 1-3 positions out of nowhere, with Alex Caruso, Lonzo Ball, and Demar DeRozan all finding a new home in the Windy City. With this in mind it’s hard not to put one of the more hype teams going into the season high up on the list. These pickups will surely prove very nicely in regards to helping Zach LaVine and company from here on out.

Prediction: 44-38

5. Atlanta Hawks

The Atlanta Hawks made quite a statement last season, making it all the way to the Eastern Conference Finals. Seemed as if out of nowhere  the Hawks just got into a rhythm at the right time. Despite their shortcomings, its hard to say that they won’t carry that momentum over to this season, especially when adding Cam Reddish’s breakout performances in the Playoffs. If anyone in the league underestimated Atlanta before, surely they’ll keep them on their radars now and for years to come so as long as Trae Young is around.

Prediction: 48-34

4. Boston Celtics

Unlike the Hawks, the Celtics found themselves bit by the injury bug come playoff time in their All-Star guard in Jaylen Brown. On the bright side, Brown will be returning off a surgery and is looking more capable than ever to help do his part going into the season. In regards to other players, the Celtics stayed busy revamping their roster to add complementary pieces to both Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum. With new faces like Josh Richardson and Dennis Schroder, and familiar faces with Al Horford into the mix. This season should prove rather interesting for the Celtics, especially knowing that they’ve finally established their core and added pieces necessary to help them.

Prediction: 49-33

3. Philadelphia 76ers

It has been quite the interesting off season for the Sixers organization regarding the Ben Simmons situation. As of now Simmons remains a Sixer, but seems as though by just barely. It remains to be seen how the Sixers will perform moving forward, whether that be with or without Simmons, but regardless of the front office’s decision, it’s not a stretch to say that the Sixers will still be in contention for the Championship come post season. The only struggle that may arise for Philly is the adjustment period of either bringing Ben Simmons into the mix or finding who’s to take his spot if the case be that Simmons were to be traded.

Prediction: 51-31

2. Milwaukee Bucks

The Bucks are coming off a fantastic Playoff run last year that ultimately led to the NBA Championship coming to Milwaukee. Although there’s been much doubt amongst the media and fans alike that the Bucks won’t be able to repeat, I’d like to believe that the chances aren’t as slim as most may think. With a Championship now under their belts, many players are able to now play a bit more freely, not feeling as much outside pressure that others may feel. It should also be stated that in the short time we’ve been able to watch Giannis Antetokounmpo this pre-season, it would appear that Giannis has been working considerably on what he’s been criticized on ever since he came into the league, his ability to shoot. Now that it seems that he feels more comfortable taking jump shots, Giannis might just become a bigger problem for other teams than he already is.

Prediction: 57-25

1. Brooklyn Nets

Similarly to the Sixers, the Nets have been put in an interesting predicament regarding Kyrie Irving and his vaccination status. The Nets organization have come out and said they would no longer be extending Irving’s contract, which although proves detrimental for both parties, doesn’t hurt the team more than it does the player. Whether or not Irving plays, the Nets are still in a position to be the favorites to compete for the NBA Championship out of the East so as long as Kevin Durant and James Harden remain healthy come Playoffs. The Nets have also made some moves in terms of depth, having LaMarcus Aldridge back for another stint, Patty Mills, and Paul Millsap strengthening themselves whenever Durant or Harden are not on the floor.

Prediction: 60-22

________________________________________________________________

With this all in mind, the 2021-2022 NBA Season commences with their Season Opener, tonight at 7:30pm ET with the Brooklyn Nets taking on the defending champions Milwaukee Bucks followed by the Golden State Warriors versus the Los Angeles Lakers at 10:00pm ET with coverage provided by TNT.

SR – 2020-2021 NBA Finals Preview: Milwaukee Bucks vs. Phoenix Suns

Featured

The journey to this point of the 2020-2021 NBA Season has been grueling and riddled with surprises, and this year’s Playoffs have been no different. The stage is now set for this year’s Finals with two unlikely names in the Phoenix Suns and the Milwaukee Bucks.

The Finals shall be comprised of two teams that haven’t made many championship runs in many year’s past. The Phoenix Suns had quite the stretch in last year’s bubble in Orlando, only to fall short of making it to the NBA Playoffs while on the other side, the Milwaukee Bucks had a short stint in last year’s Playoffs. Both organizations have interesting narratives regarding their respective journey’s to the NBA Finals.

____________________________________________

As previously stated, the Phoenix Suns made an incredible run in last year’s NBA Bubble in Orlando going 8-0 to finish out the season. Unfortunately for them, it was not quite enough to propel themselves into contention of the NBA Playoffs. With some roster adjustments this coming season, most notably with Chris Paul in the mix, things had changed quite clearly, now knowing that the Suns are now four wins away of achieving the NBA Championship, something that no one on that roster may want more than said Chris Paul himself, the perennial all-star point guard who has made it to the Playoffs 13 out of 16 years in the league. Alongside Paul, is the young core of the Suns roster in Deandre Ayton, who in which has truly come into form this post season as well as the bright future of the Phoenix Suns organization that is Devin Booker.

____________________________________________

Similar to their Western opposition in this Finals series, the Milwaukee Bucks have shown a great deal of resiliency on their journey to this point in the post-season. Giannis and crew have made consecutive trips to the Playoffs as of the 2016-2017 NBA Season, unfortunately to no success despite going into some Playoffs as the 1st seed and the overall favorites to win the Championship. They’ve received much criticism from both NBA fans and the media alike, and to see them finally have the opportunity to disprove such commentary is something not to be taken lightly. With the addition of Jrue Holiday, the Bucks have potentially found that extra push that was needed to get them where they ultimately wanted to be.

____________________________________________

Keys to the series:

Phoenix Suns: With the kinds of numbers that the Phoenix Suns core have been putting up, it almost safe to say that Chris Paul, Deandre Ayton, and Devin Booker will provide a good amount of the offense. However, it is also imperative for the role players on the team that have been imperative to their success thus far, proceed to impact the game of both sides of the floor. This would include individuals such as Cameron Payne, Jae Crowder, and Mikal Bridges to name a few.

Milwaukee Bucks: Knowing that Giannis Antetokounmpo will be sitting out Game 1 of this series may present some concerns for Bucks fans and the Bucks organization alike. It is still unsure if or when he’ll be cleared to play in the series at all, and with that in mind the remainder of the Bucks roster must be able to pick up any slack that may be left in Giannis’ absence as they did in the closeout game against Atlanta. Another key thing to keep an eye out for is Milwaukee’s ability to contain the Suns offensively as much as humanly possible, throwing different defensive looks at Booker and Paul.

Prediction: Bucks in 6.

With all this in mind we are merely hours away from tip-off where Milwaukee Bucks will be taking on the Phoenix Suns for Game 1 of the 2020-2021 NBA Finals. Both the game and the series for the NBA Championship will begin at 6:00PM PST on ABC.

Truly in an underdog fashion, the Atlanta Hawks beat the Philadelphia 76ers in a grueling 7 game series to secure their spot to this year’s Eastern Conference Finals to face off against Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks. These two teams that many had brushed off going into this year’s Playoffs will be compete for their chance to play on the biggest stage that is the NBA Finals.

Match-Up Preview:

This year’s Eastern Conference Finals match-up is one perhaps many would admit they didn’t see coming. After respective teams won their series’ against what seemed to be this year’s favorites in the Philadelphia 76ers and the Brooklyn Nets, it would appear the Eastern Conference is up for grabs entirely for the two remaining organizations.

The #3 Milwaukee Bucks persevered against all the odds, having beat what appeared to be the team expected to win it all this year in the Brooklyn Nets. With such a victory behind them, the Bucks have all the momentum they need to continue on their journey towards a championship. The team has a different feel to it this time around in comparison to its previous iterations, with additions such as Jrue Holiday and P.J. Tucker to help on both ends of the floor, while the other staple pieces of the roster in Giannis Antetokounmpo and Khris Middleton continue to play at a high level. The Bucks have a multitude of 2-way players who can impact the game on both ends on the floor, which is more than needed when going into a series against Trae Young and the Atlanta Hawks.

The #5 Atlanta Hawks have really seemed to be the Cinderella Story of this year’s Playoffs, especially after winning against the 76ers. Like the Bucks, they too have a great a deal of momentum as well. Trae Young has seemingly led the way with their push to the championship, averaging almost 30 points per game throughout the entirety of the Playoffs. The roster, unbeknownst to many, came as quite as a surprise in regards to how they’ve been able to gel as a bonafide Playoff contender considering their standings in year’s past. They’ve quite the blend of young talent in Trae Young, John Collins, and Kevin Huerter and veteran presence in Danilo Gallinari, Lou Williams, and Bogdan Bogdanovic. It will be must-see television to see who can get the edge on over the other upon the start of this series.

Ultimately this series comes down to getting stops on the defensive end, for both teams can and will score and make plays without question. Which team will be able to make the correct adjustments on both ends of the floor to propel themselves forward in the series to win it when it is all said and done? With that in mind the amount of different defensive players the Milwaukee Bucks have may provide the edge that they need to make life difficult for the Hawks. However, the Hawks have been seen as the underdogs the entirety of the post-season and have been exceeding expectations over the course of the first two rounds, and they just may continue to do so.

Prediction: Milwaukee in 6

The Eastern Conference Finals kick off with the Atlanta Hawks taking on the Milwaukee Bucks today, June 23rd, at 8:30PM ET on TNT.

SR – 2020-2021 NBA Western Conference Finals Preview: Phoenix Suns vs. Los Angeles Clippers

Featured

After an emphatic win against the Utah Jazz in a thrilling 6-game series, the Los Angeles Clippers punch their ticket to the Western Conference Finals for the first time in team history to face off against the Phoenix Suns. Both teams are both eager to get the series going to see who will continue their journey to the NBA Finals.

Match-Up Preview:

The situation revolving around this year’s Western Conference Finals is an interesting one nonetheless. With Kawhi Leonard out for Games 1 & 2 due to knee injury and Chris Paul to miss Game 1 due to COVID-19 protocols. This leaves the first couple of games up for grabs for whichever team can gain an edge on the other early into the series.

The #2 Phoenix Suns have bulldozed their way though the first two rounds of the Playoffs, having had quite the break after sweeping the #3 Denver Nuggets. It seems as if the Suns just figured things out, with pieces of their roster stepping up with names like Jae Crowder, Cameron Payne, and Deandre Ayton. Alongside Devin Booker who has been a problem for teams and Chris Paul finding a second wind going into the Playoffs, it seems as if the Suns are the team to beat coming out of the West this season. However, with a losing regular season record to their opponents 2-1, the Los Angeles Clippers hope that they can keep that same pace going into their series.

The #4 Los Angeles Clippers are seemingly quite opposite of the Phoenix Suns these Playoffs this season, having had to play more games within their series’ in comparison to other standing teams at this time. Like the Suns, however, the Clippers have had some solid breakout performances by their role players like Terance Mann, Marcus Morris Sr., and Reggie Jackson. Once Kawhi can come back into the mix with Paul George after being cleared for his knee, this team will surely make things difficult for Chris Paul and crew.

It is difficult to say with any certainty which team has the edge going into the series, but what can be expected is some high level performances from both sides, and it will ultimately come down to which team can string together such performances to win the series.

Prediction: Phoenix in 7

The Phoenix Suns will take on the Los Angeles Clippers at the Talking Stick Resort Arena for Game 1 of this year’s NBA Western Conference Finals tomorrow, June 20th at 12:30pm PST on ABC.

SR – NBA Trade Grades: Boston Celtics Trade Kemba Walker to OKC for Al Horford, Moses Brown

Featured

NBA fans everywhere caught wind of a very unexpected surprise yesterday morning, June 18th, upon learning the Boston Celtics have sent 10-year veteran and UCONN legend Kemba Walker to the Oklahoma City Thunder for Al Horford’s second stint in a Celtics jersey alongside young big Moses Brown.

___________________________________________________________

Trade Details

OKC Thunder receive: Kemba Walker, 2021 1st round pick, 2025 2nd round pick

Boston Celtics receive: Al Horford, Moses Brown, 2023 2nd round pick

___________________________________________________________

Trade Analysis

Boston Celtics

With all the changes that the Boston Celtics made after their first round exit against the Brooklyn Nets in this year’s Playoffs, it came with no surprise that the front office changes were only the beginning for the organization. Al Horford was able to help the Celtics make deeper Playoff runs during his first stint with the team, and surely they’re hoping that may continue with him back within the rotation. Additionally, Moses Brown showed glimpses of a solid traditional big, something that felt like was lacking with Daniel Theis’ departure during the trade deadline. This time around it also seems like they’re truly keeping focus on their core of Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum, who in which would be the primary ball handlers for the team. This would also likely bring Marcus Smart into the starting lineup, an all-around guard who can score within the flow of the team. Although some many find sending Kemba Walker away as a bit of a head scratcher, there is a lot of potential for both the Celtics and Thunder to be better this time around.

SR Trade Grade: B+

Oklahoma City Thunder

The Thunder have found themselves in quite an interesting situation. They have some very strong emerging names with the likes of Isaiah Roby, Darius Bazley, Luguentz Dort, and Aleksej Pokuševski. With Shai Gilgeous-Alexander at the front of it all, what the Thunder have in front of themselves is a very young team with loads of potential, which with the amount of presence they have in the NBA Drafts to come, will seem to hold true for years to come. Now throwing Kemba Walker to the mix, you are left with a guard that can take some of the pressure of Shai as the sole primary ball handler, and allow him to play more freely to score and play within the offense rather than having to run it entirely by himself. Additionally, with the amount of picks they have in the future, they’ll be able to draft players that they can utilized beneficially for the young core they already have. There’s loads of potential in Oklahoma, and hopefully in time things will begin to pan out for this organization.

SR Trade Grade: B
