Wrapping Up June: The Sneaker Drops You Need to Know About

Nike has a history of successfully collaborating with top-notch television series. Whether it be Entourage, Friends, Martin, or Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, the Swoosh knows how to market both a popular show and a sneaker at the same time. Netflix’s highly successful series, Stranger Things, is no different. To coincide with the series’ third season premier, Nike will be releasing three pairs of sneakers inspired by the decade in which the show takes place (1980’s) and the high school in which the characters attend (Hawkins High). Slated to release are the classic silhouettes of the Nike Blazer, Tailwind 79, and Cortez – each done up in some combination of white, green, and orange. Each pair will retail for $120 and be releasing on the 27th of June.

The newly crowned 2019 NBA MVP, Giannis Antetokounmpo, gets his long-awaited first signature shoe with Nike. The Nike Zoom Freak 1 “Total Orange” is slated for a June 29th debut with a reasonable retail price of $120. Overall simple in design, the shoe’s most dominant design feature comes in the form of the reverse Nike swoosh making up the lateral midsole on each foot. “Reverse” Nike swooshes on sneakers are hit or miss with buyers, but you have to look back at the success of the Nike Lebron X and Nike PG 2/2.5 to know that it can be done, if done right. Look for Giannis to be sporting his new signature sneaker next season, however you’ll be able to rock them yourself in just a few days.

You know the annoying Sprint commercial on TV right now that starts with a sarcastic, “Great, another wireless add…..”? Well if Jordan Brand had their own version of that commercial it would go like, “Great, another white/black/red Air Jordan 1.” This is exactly the case with their next release of yet another Jordan 1 in what seems like an endless amount of white, black, and red color blocking options. I mean we can all agree that the Air Jordan 1 is a timeless shoe and this colorway is a classic. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it…..I  guess? None-the-less these Air Jordan 1 Retro High “Gym Red” will be releasing on the 29th with a price $160.

2019 NBA Draft – How Long Will This Year’s Draft Prospects Stay With Their Respective Sneaker Brands? A look back at past rookie endorsement deals.

2019 NBA Draft – How Long Will This Year’s Draft Prospects Stay With Their Respective Sneaker Brands? A look back at past rookie endorsement deals.

Featured

Tonight, the best young basketball players in the world will walk across that stage after having their names called in the 2019 NBA Draft. Whether it be the “one-and-dones,” overseas prospects, 3-4 year college players, or prep school prodigy – each player in the draft pool has their eyes set on this night and what their future holds. With great talent in such young male athletes, comes great marketability. Top dog brands like Nike, Adidas, and Under Armour are vying to sign the next big face of the league. Resurgent brands to the likes of New Balance, Puma, and And1 are trying their hand to convince 19-21 year-olds to go against the mold. Overseas companies like Anta, Li-Ning and PEAK will most likely pitch these future NBA players of how much focus will be on them within their brand opposed to if they signed with a bigger company.

Most NBA rookies will sign some sort of sneaker/apparel endorsement deal, with the lottery picks having more extensive contracts and more guaranteed money. With that being said though, just how long will these newly acquired NBA players last with their respective brands? These initial contracts can be somewhat short in length and once the bright lights wear off and a young 20 year-old realizes he’s stuck wearing Reebok ZigTechs every year, a change will soon be desired. Yes the money from smaller brands can be great, but then you come to the realization that you can’t wear Kobes, Lebrons, Hardens, Jordans, KD’s, PG’s, etc. anymore. We take a look back at some notable draft picks from years past who signed head scratching sneaker endorsement deals right out of the gate and then eventually jumped ship.

JOHN WALL – Drafted (2010) – Signed with Reebok (2010-2013) – Currently signed with Adidas

If there’s a player who’s had quite the rollercoaster of sneaker endorsement stops, it’s John Wall. Wall was quick to sign with Reebok immediately after declaring for the NBA Draft back in 2010. He even wore his first signature sneaker with them during the summer league. This was an interesting move considering Reebok had little to no stake with players choosing to wear their product when it came to basketball. Reebok must’ve paid Wall a pretty penny to sway him away from the likes of Nike and Adidas (at the time). Wall left Reebok in 2013 and joined Adidas (who has owned the Reebok brand since 2005). However, when Wall’s contract with Adidas expired on September 30th, 2015 he opted to test the waters for wearing other brand’s shoes. Wall was initially seen wearing Kobe’s with tape over the swoosh due to his lingering contractual obligations to the Three Stripes. Then when he was officially a sneaker free agent he would be seen wearing Jordan retros, multiple Kobe models, and PG’s. John Wall has since re-joined the Adidas brand and said he’s looking forward to a “fresh start.”

DWAYNE WADE – Drafted (2003) – Signed with Converse (2003-2009) – Currently signed with Li-Ning

Dwayne Wade entered the league in 2003 and unlike his notable counterparts Lebron James (Nike) and Carmelo Anthony (Team Jordan), Wade opted to sign with Converse and be the face of that brand’s basketball division. He had six signature sneakers with Converse from 2003-2009 but then signed with The Jordan Brand in the summer of 2009. He would go onto have two signature shoes with the Jumpman but then left in 2012 to join Chinese company Li-Ning. Wade has been with Li-Ning ever since and has had many iterations of signature shoes with them.

STEPH CURRY – Drafted (2009) – Signed with Nike (2009-2013) – Currently signed with Under Armour

No one thought Steph Curry would blow up to become the player he is now, including Nike. Back in ’13 when Nike was pitching to re-sign Curry they just didn’t do a stand-up job and simply dropped the ball. They weren’t treating Curry like how they treated Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis. When Curry met with Under Armour he, and his father, could tell they genuinely wanted him to be a part of their brand and would represent him in a combined effort to gravitate towards his fans. Steph never had a signature shoe with Nike, just P.E. versions of the Hyperdunk, Hyperfuse, Hyperize, etc., but since then Curry has had six signature shoes with UA including off-court spinoffs as well.

NERLENS NOEL – Drafted (2013) – Signed with Reebok (2013-2014) – Currently a sneaker free agent (wears Nikes)

Reebok must have all of these young draft prospect’s phone numbers on speed dial because they seem to get a lot of the new stars in the league (used to). Unfortunately for RBK, their partnerships with these newly acquired NBA players never seem to last long anymore. Gone are the days of Allen Iverson, Shaquille O’Neal, Dee Brown, and Dominique Wilkins – back when Reebok won over consumers within the basketball market. Nerlens Noel was highly touted out of high school and after his one year at Kentucky was a lottery pick in the 2013 NBA Draft. He was supposed to be a part of the effort to “rejuvenate” the Reebok basketball line, along with Isaiah Thomas and Jason Terry. Trying to make Reebok basketball footwear relevant again was always making new versions of old Iverson’s (the Questions) or making an “updated” version of their pump technology (seen above), and this never equated to success in the market.

So where will this year’s top NBA picks end up in sneaker free agency? How long will these players stay with the brands that they initially sign with? Lebron James’ lifetime deal with Nike is basically an anomaly at this point. Although it may seem like Kobe Bryant has been with the Swoosh for life, even he was signed with Adidas for a hot minute during his first few years in the league. Ja Morant, projected second overall pick, made the first move out of 2019’s prospects by signing with Nike. Will Zion follow suit and choose the “Check” over rivals Adidas and Under Armour? Does it come down to just the money with these young stars? – as was probably the case for a few of the athletes above like Wall and Noel. This 2019 NBA Draft class will surely shake up the world of sneaker endorsements.

The Art of Taking An ‘L’ – Courtesy of the Nike SNKRS App

The Art of Taking An ‘L’ – Courtesy of the Nike SNKRS App

Featured

If you’re remotely into sneakers, or just into hyped up and limited releases, then you should be familiar with the process of how Nike launches them. The SNKRS app from Nike was created and launched in 2015 to make it more accessible for buyers to purchase limited sneaker releases. To “win” the opportunity to purchase a coveted release basically all you have to do is download the app and create a Nike+ account. Once you enter in your address and payment info the app automatically checks you out on sneaker launches you enter to win (if your entry is selected).

Unfortunately a lot of people are unhappy with how the current Nike SNKRS is run and have become increasingly frustrated with losing out on the opportunity to buy their favorite pairs. There are bots still beating the system and scooping up a majority of the pairs or people that just win constantly on the app with no intentions of wearing any of the pairs they secure. These reasons are plenty enough to give consumers across the sneaker world headaches.

We interviewed three normal, regular sneaker buyers who have done their fair share of collecting and asked them, “What are some things you would change about the Nike SNKRS app or how would you do it?” These are the responses and feedback we got from them:

Interviewee 1:

“I would create a better/fair opportunity for everyone to enter (the drawings). I also want to know what exactly are the qualifications to win a drawing/release? – if any. There should be a rewards program like FA and FL to give a more even playing field to win on the app. On big anticipated releases, make sure their (Nike’s) software doesn’t glitch out when we (the buyers) go to pay and whatnot. Lastly, Nike should create an extensive encryption to prevent bots. Go through a more verified identity process to prevent the same person creating a lot of ‘burner’ accounts.”

Interviewee 2:

“I would honestly like to see more ‘draws’ considering bots take all the first-come-first-serves and better chances at getting shoes. I would like more of a fair opportunity for people to buy shoes. They also have to fix the error when you type in your passwords and it says “invalid password” because of the app jamming up. When it is first-come-first-serve on the app it always crashes or bots buy them within minutes. I know people have fast hands but it’s to the point where me and my boy stay up all night and morning just to try and beat them (the bots). They should give each person ample time to get them or have you type in a code that’s specific to each phone. That might limit bots because only the user can have a phone but they need to limit how many accounts one person can use somehow.”

Interviewee 3:

“It’s really hard to tell if it’s fair, is it like the Footlocker app where if you spend enough you constantly win? It’s not hard to enter but I  always question if it’s fair. I’ve only hit on one actual ‘draw shoe,’ others were first-come-first-serve style. I hit on the “Off-White Blazers” draw style and for that I had 10 minutes to enter, then whatever happens, happens.”

What are your thoughts on the Nike SNKRS app? Would you change anything similarly to what our interviewees had in mind? How has your luck been as far as being selected on the app to purchase limited releases?

Colorful Flyknit Air Jordan Retros and Nike Shox Making a Comeback? Sneaker releases to lookout for this week

Colorful Flyknit Air Jordan Retros and Nike Shox Making a Comeback? Sneaker releases to lookout for this week

Featured

Does Nike have a chance at trying to revive their tried-and-true Nike Shox line? What was once the dominant sneaker choice of the early 2000’s (in terms of performance) is now going to make a resurgence as a lifestyle shoe. Just yesterday, the Swoosh released the Nike Shox R4 “White Flash” in a white/black/volt colorway ($140). Perhaps more intriguing and widely appealing is their limited June 13th release of the Comme des Garcons x Nike Shox TL in the “Triple White” and “Triple Black” color schemes. Is this collaborative effort with CDG enough to put Nike Shox back on peoples’ cop lists or should the Shox fad remain a thing of the past? Both colorways of the Comme des Garcons x Nike Shox TL will retail for $350 each.

The wildly charismatic and unpredictable Odell Beckham Jr is getting his own release of the Nike Air Max 720 model. Dressed in multi-color/hyper pink there’s no way to look at this shoe other than it matches OBJ’s persona to a T. This shoe has a special release on June 12th at overseas retailer Solebox Berlin (limited to 20 pairs) but then will have a worldwide release on June 21st. They will retail for $200.

Streetwear brand Supreme will once again be collaborating with Jordan Brand on their joint release of two colorways of the Air Jordan 14 set to come out on the 13th. Inspired by an outfit Michael Jordan wore in the 90’s, these sneakers feature studded jewels on the side panels on top of a black/varsity royal and white/university red color blocking. Each pair will run you $248.

If you want your feet to pop and stand out this summer look no further than any colorway in the Air Jordan 4 Flyknit pack. Flyknit Jordan retros have never been hit with much fanfare, so are these Retro 4’s just in line to receive the same treatment? Even on social media platforms people are saying, “I’ll cop when they hit outlets,” or, “I’d only wear if they were given to me for free.” These sayings are somewhat accurate as the fly knit Jordan 1’s and 3’s hit numerous outlets and don’t receive much praise from sneaker aficionados. Maybe the vibrant color pallets featured on these four pairs will sway peoples’ judgements? The Air Jordan 4 Flyknit release on June 14th in “Hyper Royal”, “University Red”, “Volt”, and “Total Orange.” Each pair will have a $220 price tag.

Kicking off the Summer with June’s Hottest Sneaker Drops

Kicking off the Summer with June’s Hottest Sneaker Drops

Featured

Summer is heating up and this month kicked off with a slew of highly-anticipated releases, as well as a surprise drop by Nike. June 1st got the ball rolling with the release of the Nike Air Fear of God 1 in the “Orange Pulse” and “Frosted Spruce” colorways. Unfortunately, if you look throughout all of social media it seems as if the only people who were actually able to obtain the Nike Air Fear of God 1’s were celebrities and highly touted young basketball players. Jerry Lorenzo’s F.O.G. collection always comes with its hype and this iteration was no exception.

June 1st also saw the release of the Air Jordan 7 “Ray Allen PE.” This silhouette was dressed in a black nubuck upper along with purple, green, and grey accents to pay homage to the old school Milwaukee Bucks. Should Jordan Brand keep on releasing colorways of P.E. models from their signature athletes, or should some stay in the vault forever? Another Nike Zoom Kobe 4 Protro dropped on June 1st in the “Carpe Diem” colorway. This summer could see a lot of young hoopers wearing the Kobe 4 Protros as its style and performance is still very much on par with todays standards and most of these teenagers were only 5-7 years old during the shoe’s initial run.

On June 2nd Nike surprised us with a shock drop of the Air Jordan 4 Raptors (again), but this time in a “Drake PE” form. Nike and Jordan Brand have done this in the past; almost toying with us, releasing a shoe that is 99% the same as another, but changing one slight detail on it to increase the hype. This pair was basically the same version that released back in August of 2018, also retailing for $200, with the only difference being this new “PE” version has a purple Jumpman on the tongue with Drake’s signature below it in red. There have been rumors going around that the 2018 Jordan 4 Raptors had a release run of 200,000 pairs while the “Drake PE” saw its numbers at around 15,000 pairs.

June 6th saw the release of the Adidas Yeezy Boost 700 V2 “Vanta” as well as the Adidas Yeezy Boost 350 V2 “Black Reflective,” with the “Non Reflective” version releasing a day later on the 7th. The 700’s display simple black and dark grey tones on the upper while sitting on top of a dark grey midsole. The 350 V2’s consist of just an all black prime knit upper with the reflective pair being completely 3M when the flash hits it. Is anyone else getting Yeezy 350 V2 fatigue, or is the demand for them still steady with each coming release? The 700’s retail for $300 and the 350 V2’s are at the expected $220 mark. To celebrate Pride Month, Nike will be releasing their new Air Max 720 model (June 8), the Zoom Pegasus Turbo (June 8), and the Air Max 90 (June 15), all dressed in a rainbow color scheme in accordance with Nike’s “Be True” campaign. The Air Max 720’s have a retail price of $190, Zoom Pegasus Turbo – $180, and Air Max 90 – $130.

This weekend Jordan Brand will release the “Reflections of a Champion” pack which includes the Air Jordan 6, 7, and 8 respectively. Each model represents an original colorway but instead of white leather or black nubuck for the materials, the pack has light grey 3M uppers on each pair. Is Jordan Brand reaching with this concept of “Reflections of a Champion” by simply releasing 3M sneakers? Are you willing to pay the hefty retail price of $225 each? At this point, the exclusivity factor on each pair may be the only thing to draw in buyers’ attention.
