Following the explosive argument between Issa (Issa Rae) and Molly (Yvonne Orji) during the block party, episode 6: Lowkey Done is the aftermath of what happens next in Molly and Issa’s relationship. Focused primarily on Issa dealing with the separation, the previews of next week’s episode seem to be about Molly.
This episode begins with an overhead shot of Issa in the bed replaying every word of the argument in her head. The appearances of Issa no longer being able to sleep she checks her phone first Facebook with tons of message speaking about the success of the block party put a smile on her face, then as she checks her voice messages from family and close friends telling her to not about the argument with Molly.
This scene shows me who in their group of friends has Issa back and which ones agree with Molly. The ones to call Issa where her brother, Kelli (Natasha Rothwell), and she eventually got a call from Nathan (Kendrick Sampson). If my theory right next episode will show who called to check-in on Molly.
Those words still weighing heavily on Issa, its time to rap about the situation in the bathroom mirror. The reflection puts things into perspective noting she is the one to reach out, Molly plays a part in this to it’s finally time for Molly to be the one to own up and admit she wrong. But will she reach out but will she?
So what better way to put that situation in the rearview then to partaking in self-care Sunday, a little cleaning of her living space and mind. The cleaning of her apartment was metaphorical to me, it was like Issa was getting rid of things she no longer needs in her life.
Throughout this episode, we see Issa is trying to practice being a better person first attempting to buy the groceries of a pregnant woman at the supermarket, then offering a ride to an elderly man who missed his bus and finally trying to befriend some women she meets during her sip n’ paint activity. Each situation highlighted how people can either take advantage of your kindness or just be flat out mean.
When attempting to pay for the pregnant woman groceries it made painfully obvious that she doesn’t have the money to pay for them. The store clerk made a rude comment following the second declined payment and the pregnant woman makes a sly remake about how Issa put things in perspective for her.
The elderly man named George (, who missed his bus complicated entire time as Issa drove him to his destination. It was about the AC was too cold to the heat was too hot, he even mad Issa pull over so he could use the bathroom. I mean……what if he was on the bus? What would he have done?
Following the activity of sip n’ paint Issa is invited to lunch with the three ladies, Kinsey (Emana Rachelle), Rahel (Mykal Monroe), and Dina (Kyla Pratt) she sat with but after a trip to the bathroom we find out that they left Issa with the bill as part of Dina’s Bachelorette scavenger hunt. Issa did find the women and envisioned slam the painting on the top of Kinsey’s head.
After the day she had Issa visited her mother (Wendy Raquel Robinson) sensing something was wrong, she offers Issa a hug allowing Issa to just let everything go. The stress of the day and everything that’s going on between her and Molly. After a good cry, Issa sits down to have a talk with her mother “I just don’t know what I’m supposed to do next,” Issa stated ” Sounds to me like you’re entering into a new season of your life,” Her mother replied. Those words resonated with me because there have been plenty of times in life I feel lost with what’s next and made this is the shows way to establish more growth in Issa’s life by separating her from Molly because they’re on two different paths. Issa looking for her purpose in life and Molly who has an established career is looking for love. So up to this point, the journey of these two has been conflicting with one another.
