Lakers Are Reportedly Interested In DeMarcus Cousins On A Short Term Deal

Lakers Are Reportedly Interested In DeMarcus Cousins On A Short Term Deal

NBA

The Los Angeles Lakers struck out on signing Paul George but that doesn’t mean they are giving up on making huge improvements to their team. LeBron James still remains their main target but it is also being reported that they have quite a bit of interest in signing DeMarcus Cousins. It sounds like, at least for now, they are more interested in a short team deal rather than committing money long term. LeBron is a big fan of Cousins and signing him could be another way to entice him to be there as well.

There are likely multiple reasons for only wanting to do a short term deal with Cousins. First, he is coming off a season ending Achilles injury and is currently rehabbing, although he does expect to be ready for training camp. Secondly, the team could want to take a wait and see approach and wait until next season ends to discuss more long term options should they sign him this summer.  One of the things to wait and see about could be seeing what happens with Kawhi Leonard next summer if they aren’t able to strike a deal with the Spurs soon.

Marc Spears of ESPN tweeted that Cousins has received calls on Saturday night from both the Pelicans and Lakers and is expected to meet with both teams very soon. Cousins showed he could play well alongside Anthony Davis but it was also pretty clear that Davis played better later in the season and in the playoffs with Cousins sidelined. That could make a possible deal with the Lakers more likely than not. With that said, don’t expect the Pelicans to just throw in the towel on retaining their twin towers of Cousins and Davis.

Paul George To Return To The Thunder On A Huge Four Year Deal

Paul George To Return To The Thunder On A Huge Four Year Deal

Featured

Fans in Oklahoma City can relax in a way they haven’t been able to in quite a while. Paul George will not be going to the Lakers after it was announced he will be staying with the Thunder on a new four year contract, reportedly worth $137 million dollars.

The deal includes three years with a player option for the fourth year. It appears the deal was likely agreed upon well before Saturday night due to the fact George didn’t even bother to meet with any other team.

Saturday night saw Russell Westbrook and Sam Presti throw a huge party in Oklahoma City that was attended by many teammates and was invite only. The party was so serious that anyone attending had to sign a non-disclosure agreement. It was at the party that George let fans know what he was going to do.

You heard the Thunder fans in attendance go wild when George confirmed but that was far from the end of the party. Nas hit the stage and Westbrook along with George were right there with him.

The Thunder now have two star players signed long term, which definitely makes things easier when it comes to future moves to put them in championship contention along with the Warriors and Rockets in the west.

Report: Chris Paul To Sign Four Year Deal With Rockets Worth $160 Million

Report: Chris Paul To Sign Four Year Deal With Rockets Worth $160 Million

NBA

It’s after midnight on July 1st, which means free agency is in full effect. One of the first big names to announce a new deal after the clock struck twelve was Chris Paul.

Adrian Wojnarowski reported that Paul will be staying with the Rockets after agreeing to a new four year deal worth $160 million dollars. Combined, the Rockets have $350 million dollars committed to their starting backcourt with the money they already gave James Harden.

Shortly after the deal was announced, Paul himself confirmed things on twitter.

With it now pretty clear that the Rockets will not be a landing spot for LeBron James, it enables them to bring back all the pieces from last seasons team that almost defeated the Warriors in the Western Conference Finals. Clint Capela, Trevor Ariza and Eric Gordon are all free agents but they will hope to at least resign Capela and Gordon. Paul obviously believes his best chance to win was staying put and I don’t think there is any debating that.

Report: Kevin Durant Will Sign A Two Year Deal With The Warriors

Report: Kevin Durant Will Sign A Two Year Deal With The Warriors

Featured

Sometime after 12:01am on July 1st, Kevin Durant intends to sign a two year contract extension with the Golden State Warriors. The news was first reported by Chris Haynes. The deal includes $30 million dollars for the 2018-19 season, with a player option for the second year.

There was a report by Stephen A Smith earlier this week that LeBron James had texted Durant recently to gauge his interest in playing together with the Lakers next season. If that report was indeed true, it appears Durant had no interest at the moment.

However, the deal Durant will sign will give him the flexibility to be a free agent again next summer and maybe choose a different path at that time. If he chooses to opt in for the 2019-2020 season, he would make $31.5 million for that year but the odds will be heavily against him doing that. He could also opt out next summer again and possibly sign a long term deal with the Warriors that would be worth around $221 million over five years.

Regardless, after next season, whether it be the Warriors or another team, Durant at that point could be a three time champion and a three time Finals MVP and he would only be 30 years old. With this new contract keeping Durant in the Bay Area for now, you can bet the Warriors are once again the hands down favorite to win the championship regardless of what else may happen in free agency this summer.
